Youtube to Sell Music and Video Games
Ever watched a video on YouTube and wanted to buy the song? YouTube is counting on it.YouTube, the world’s most popular video-sharing site, will start to sell music and video games to grow revenue from its massive audience and justify the $1.7 billion that Google Inc. paid for the site two years ago.
The “click to buy” buttons, which began appearing in the U.S. today, connect viewers to the product page on Amazon.com or Apple’s iTunes. To start, YouTube, which will receive a commission for each sale, is selling songs from two major labels, EMI Music and Universal Music Group, and video games from Electronic Arts. Eventually it wants to expand to sales of other products such as movies, television shows and concert tickets.
Analysts at Piper Jaffray Research estimated that the video site would earn about $200 million in revenue in 2009, compared with estimates of around $27 billion for Google.”This is the first step in a viable e-commerce platform,” said Bakari Brock, business affairs counsel at YouTube.
Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt has pledged to investors that YouTube will make money once it hits on the right formula. Last month he said Google was being patient. “We are where we should be,” he said.
YouTube had 330 million visitors in August 2008,the site served up about 5 billion videos in the United States, according to the latest data from comScore Inc
Microsoft Paying People to Search in a New Manner

Microsoft’s latest effort to get people to use its search service is something called SearchPerks, which gives people points for using the search engine that can later be redeemed for prizes, and it works very much like a credit card reward program.
“At this time, SearchPerks is a limited promotion, though we remain open to expending availability of the promotion to different browsers and operating systems based on consumer interest,” Microsoft said.
Microsoft says SearchPerks was already in the works and isn’t a successor to Live Search Cashback. Run quietly as a small pilot program for the past nine months, Microsoft says, SearchPerks is now open to the first 1 million people in the United States who sign-up before the end of this year.
Rewarding consumers to search is one way Microsoft hopes it can increase search traffic. The company ran tests on SearchPerks and found that people were three times more likely to use Live Search when they were offered redeemable points than when they weren’t. “People like to engage with us a lot more when they use SearchPerks,” says Frederick Savoye, a senior director on Microsoft’s search team.
Google (GOOG) holds 63% of the U.S. market. Yahoo (YHOO) is second with 19% and Microsoft’s Live Search is a distant third with an 8% share, according to comScore’s figures for August.
Every time you search, you earn tickets. You can earn up to 25 tickets a day. Tickets can later be redeemed for all sorts of rewards including music downloads (5 for 525 points) and airline miles (1000 miles for 1800 tickets).
The latest project doesn’t just require one to use Microsoft’s search engine, however. At least for now, it also requires Microsoft’s browser (Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher) as well as a Windows PC. Microsoft said those latter restrictions are not necessarily permanent.
Apple Selling Unlocked iPhone 3G
Apple Inc. has begun selling unlocked iPhones in Hong Kong that can be used with any cell phone carrier.
The move appears to depart from the company’s previous strategy of selling the popular device capable of working with 3G, or third-generation cellular networks, through specific service providers, usually with a required service contract.
“An iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation,” reads the information on the Hong Kong Apple Store pages.
The iPhone 3G was previously only officially available in Hong Kong bundled with a two-year contract from tycoon Li Ka-shing’s Hutchison Telecom, on tariff plans ranging from 188 to 498 dollars a month.
Now the question is, what will likely happen if this is true is that 3rd party online retailers will order up a bunch of these and start shipping them around the world with a small premium put on them. In a matter of weeks, the world will be flooded with SIM unlocked iPhone 3Gs which are essentially sanctioned by Apple.
SlotMusic, This year’s biggest releases
Record companies are trying to find new ways to distribute music in the face of declining music sales.SlotMusic is the name of Sandisk’s new line of music-filled microSD cards. The thinking behind slotMusic is that consumers, what with their music playing cellphones, still lack an easy way to load and listen to their favorite songs.
The “slotMusic” cards can be inserted into wireless phones and other digital music players with built-in memory card slots. SanDisk is making the announcement along with the four major music labels Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, and EMI.
“There’s a billion phones out there and a lot of them can play music and a lot of them have a microSD slot,” says Daniel Schreiber, a SanDisk vice-president. “We think there’s still a need for a tangible, physical product. People will appreciate walking out of the store playing music on their phones.”
The cards will hold 1G byte of data and will ship with a USB adapter so that users can add their own content using a PC.To persuade listeners to buy a physical medium rather than download the songs, the record companies will offer extras including liner notes, album art, videos, and “other creative content that an artist may choose”. Music tracks will also be played back at up to 320K bps.
IPhone 3G owners could be at risk of electric shock
Apple has announced that it is going to recall millions of iPhone USB power adapters that were supplied with every iPhone 3G phone in a number of countries across both sides of the Pacific except United Kingdom .
In a statement Apple said it had found that, under certain circumstances, the thin metal prongs on the power adapter could break off and get stuck in a power socket.
The ultra-compact adapters were sold with every iPhone 3G since the device went on sale in 22 countries on 11 July. Apple has sold more than six million of the devices.

Apple said it will replace adapters free of charge and that the fixed versions should be available on 10 October. Until then it said owners should recharge their phone by connecting the device to a computer via a USB port.
No injuries have been reported, but Apple is warning users of those power adapters to stop using them immediately until they obtain a redesigned adapter. Check the bottom of your adapter: if there’s a green dot, you’ve got the redesigned one and don’t need to do anything. If there’s no dot, it’s time to replace that unit.
